Growth Agency vs SEO Agency: One Sells You Rankings. The Other Owns the Outcome.
An SEO agency sells rankings. A growth agency owns the outcome across marketing and sales. Here's the difference, side by side.
Read →For most businesses turning over around $10m, partnering with a growth agency costs less than hiring a growth team, and puts senior, multi-skilled people on the work from month one. A four-person in-house marketing team in New Zealand costs about $352,000 a year in salary and KiwiSaver alone. Hiring starts to make sense when your marketing is big enough to keep full-time specialists busy in every seat.
At around $10m in revenue, most owners reach the same fork. Marketing has outgrown the owner's evenings and a part-time coordinator, and the business needs proper horsepower. The instinct is to hire: a marketing manager, then a specialist or two, then a designer.
That instinct is reasonable. Having people in the building feels like control. But a growth team is a cost line before it's a capability, and most owners only see the salary figure, not the full bill. So let's do the maths properly, using public numbers, and be fair about when hiring is the better choice.
To run marketing well, a growing business typically needs four skill sets: someone to lead strategy, someone to run search and digital channels, someone to write and someone to design. Here's what those roles cost at the midpoint of SEEK's New Zealand salary ranges, refreshed on 1 October 2026.
| Role | SEEK NZ average salary range | Midpoint used |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing Manager | $105,000 to $125,000 | $115,000 |
| Digital Marketing Specialist | $70,000 to $80,000 | $75,000 |
| Content Writer | $65,000 to $75,000 | $70,000 |
| Graphic Designer | $75,000 to $85,000 | $80,000 |
| Salaries | $340,000 | |
| Employer KiwiSaver at 3.5% | $11,900 | |
| Total before other costs | $351,900 a year |
The KiwiSaver line reflects the default employer contribution, which rose from 3% to 3.5% on 1 April 2026 and is scheduled to reach 4% in April 2028.
That $351,900 is the floor, not the total. Every in-house team also carries:
There's also a capability gap the cost table hides. Four people give you four skill sets. They don't automatically give you competitor intelligence, AI search expertise, technical SEO, paid media and data analysis. Those either get bought in on top or go without.
Growth Partners publishes its prices. Every programme includes the DigitalArchitect® data analysis, a sequenced strategy, monthly execution, a live dashboard tracking leads, sales and revenue, and a monthly review. All three run month to month, with no lock-in.
| Programme | Indicative monthly (NZD) | Annual equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Main Growth | $1,995 | $23,940 |
| Consistent Growth | $3,750 | $45,000 |
| Aggressive Growth | $5,995 | $71,940 |
Paid media can be added through Brand Boost, from $3,000 a month. Full details are on our programmes and pricing page.
Put the two options next to each other and the gap is hard to ignore. Even the highest Growth Partners programme costs about a fifth of the four-person team's salary and KiwiSaver bill, before recruitment, software or management time.
| In-house growth team | Growth agency (Aggressive Growth) | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cost | About $351,900 plus hidden costs | $71,940 |
| Time to full speed | Months of hiring and ramp-up | Data analysis and strategy in the first weeks |
| Seniority | Depends on who you can hire | Senior strategists on every account |
| Breadth of skills | Four roles | Strategy, full search stack, content, design and data |
| Competitor intelligence | Bought in separately | Built in through DigitalArchitect® |
| Commitment | Employment contracts | Month to month |
A growth agency isn't always the answer, and pretending otherwise wouldn't help you. Hiring makes sense when:
Many businesses land on a hybrid: one in-house marketing lead who knows the business inside out, working with a growth agency that brings strategy, data and specialist depth. That often gives you the best of both, for far less than a full team.
We covered a narrower version of this decision in Should you hire an in-house SEO specialist or partner with an SEO agency?. If you're weighing newer models, such as pods or talent networks, read Growth Pods, Talent Networks and Embedded Teams: What You're Actually Buying. And if you're still deciding what kind of partner you need, start with Growth Agency vs SEO Agency.
For most businesses under the size where every seat is full-time work, an agency is better value. You get senior strategy and a broader skill set for less. Hiring wins when your marketing volume and complexity justify specialists in every role.
Ask whether you need direction or capacity. If you need someone to work out where growth will come from, a growth agency gives you that from the first month. If the strategy is clear and you need hands, hiring may fit.
Based on SEEK salary midpoints refreshed in October 2026, a marketing manager, digital specialist, content writer and designer cost about $340,000 a year in salaries. Add 3.5% employer KiwiSaver and the total is about $351,900, before other costs.
Yes, and it often works well. Your in-house person brings product knowledge and internal relationships. The agency brings strategy, data, the full search stack and specialist skills. Shared reporting keeps everyone accountable to the same leads and sales numbers.
Competitor intelligence, AI search and agentic search expertise, technical SEO and data analysis are the usual gaps. At Growth Partners, DigitalArchitect® shows where you stand against competitors before execution starts, and senior strategists turn that into a sequenced plan.
Not with Growth Partners. Every programme runs month to month with no lock-in, so the relationship continues because the results justify it.
