The Zero-Click Problem: What to Do When Google Answers Before Anyone Visits You
Fewer people click when Google answers in the results. What to measure instead, and how to win the mention when you can't win the click.
Read →SEO gets your website found in search results. AEO gets your answer chosen when someone asks a direct question. GEO gets your business cited by generative AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. AIO is a looser label for optimising for AI in general. They sound like four separate jobs. They aren't. They're layers of one full search stack.
If you've had an agency pitch you GEO this month and AEO last month, this page is for you. Here's what each term means, what it changes for your business, and what to do about it.
For twenty years, search meant typing words into Google and clicking a blue link. That's no longer the only way buyers look for suppliers. Google now answers many questions directly in the results, AI assistants write summaries with a handful of sources, and AI agents can research and shortlist on a buyer's behalf.
The shift is real. In G2's 2026 Buyer Behavior Report, 51% of B2B software buyers said they now start their research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% a year earlier. Each new way of searching picked up its own acronym, and the industry has been selling them one at a time ever since.
| Term | Stands for | Where it shows up | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimisation | Google and Bing results | Pages that are crawlable, relevant, fast and trusted |
| AEO | Answer engine optimisation | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants | Clear, direct answers to specific questions |
| GEO | Generative engine optimisation | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, AI Mode | Specific, citable facts from a credible source |
| AIO | AI optimisation (sometimes "AI Overviews optimisation") | Any AI-driven search surface | In most usage, the same things as GEO |
| Agentic search | AI agents that research and act for a buyer | AI browsers and assistants that compare and shortlist | Consistent, structured facts and an easy next step |
Search engine optimisation is still the base layer. If your pages aren't indexed, fast and trusted by search engines, nothing above it works, because AI tools draw heavily on the same web that search engines crawl. Google's own guidance for its AI features says there are no extra technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the page simply has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search.
Answer engine optimisation is about being the response, not just a result. It grew up around featured snippets and voice search, and it matters more now that answers appear before the links. In practice it means writing pages that state the question a buyer asks and answer it in the first line or two, then give the detail.
Generative engine optimisation comes from a 2024 research paper by teams at Princeton and IIT Delhi, presented at the KDD conference. The researchers tested what makes content more visible in AI-generated answers. Adding statistics, quotations and cited sources lifted visibility by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing, the old SEO trick, made visibility worse. In short, AI rewards substance.
AIO is used inconsistently. Some people mean "AI optimisation" in general; others mean optimising for Google's AI Overviews specifically. Either way it overlaps almost entirely with GEO. Treat it as part of the same job.
The newest layer. AI agents can now browse websites, compare suppliers and build a shortlist for a buyer. They need clear facts, consistent details and forms or booking links that work. We covered this in Is Your Website Ready for AI Agents?, and Thursday's post goes deeper into how AI shortlists suppliers.
What doesn't change: the fundamentals. A fast, well-structured website with useful content written by people who know the subject is still what search engines and AI tools want.
What does change is where the value shows up:
At Growth Partners we don't sell SEO, AEO and GEO as separate services, because the work overlaps so much that splitting it up mostly splits the budget. Mal Jack, our co-founder, puts it simply: "You've heard GEO, SEO, AIO, but what you're really talking about is a full search stack."
Think of it as layers, each built on the one below:
Our search team works across all four together, and Storyhouse, our creative team, supplies the words, pictures and video that give AI and people something worth quoting.
One warning. If an agency proposes GEO as a separate retainer on top of SEO, ask what they'd do differently. The honest answer is usually "not much".
SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO helps your content become the direct answer to a question. GEO helps your business get cited in AI-generated answers. They overlap heavily and work best as one strategy.
Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring content so search engines and assistants can use it as a direct answer, for example in featured snippets or voice results.
Generative engine optimisation is the practice of making content more likely to be cited by AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Research presented at KDD 2024 found statistics, quotations and cited sources improved visibility by up to 40%.
No. AI tools draw on the same indexed web, so strong SEO remains the foundation. GEO builds on it.
No. The same work drives all of them. One team covering the full search stack avoids paying twice for overlapping effort.
We'll show you how visible your business is in search and AI answers compared with your competitors, and which layer to fix first.
