The Zero-Click Problem: What to Do When Google Answers Before Anyone Visits You

A zero-click search is one that ends on the results page. The searcher gets an answer from Google, an AI Overview or a featured snippet, and never visits a website. It's now the most common outcome of a Google search, and it's why many businesses are seeing fewer website clicks even when their rankings hold steady.

That's unsettling if you've always measured search by traffic. But it isn't the end of search as a growth channel. It's a change in what winning looks like. Here's what's happening, what to measure instead, and how to win the mention when you can't win the click.

How big the zero-click shift is

The numbers have moved quickly:

  • Most searches don't produce a click. SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb data for January to April 2026 found 68% of US Google searches ended without a click, up from about 60% in its 2024 study.
  • AI Overviews cut clicks further. The same analysis found AI Overviews appear on more than 20% of Google searches, and that click-through rates drop by nearly 60% when they do.
  • People rarely click the sources. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults' real searches in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a regular result on 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary. They clicked a link inside the summary itself on just 1% of visits.

Add the growing number of buyers who start in an AI chatbot rather than Google at all, and the old model of "rank, get the click, convert the visitor" now covers a shrinking share of how people find suppliers.

Don't panic: not all lost clicks were buyers

Before redesigning your strategy, look at which clicks you're losing. Zero-click results hit simple questions hardest: definitions, quick facts, "what is" and "how to" queries. Many of those visitors were never going to buy.

Buyers still check before they commit. TrustRadius's 2026 B2B Buying Disconnect report found 94% of buyers verify AI-generated research before relying on it. When they're close to a decision, they come looking for the source. The job is to make sure your business is the source they find.

How to spot zero-click in your own data

You can see the effect in Search Console in about ten minutes:

  1. Open the Performance report and compare the last three months with the same period last year.
  2. Turn on impressions, clicks, average CTR and average position.
  3. Look for pages where impressions are steady or rising, position is steady, but clicks and CTR have fallen.
  4. Open the queries for those pages. If they're mostly "what is" and "how to" questions, AI Overviews and snippets are likely answering them on the results page.

Pages that answer commercial questions, such as pricing, comparisons and "near me" searches, usually hold their clicks better. Those are the pages to protect first.

What to measure instead of clicks

If traffic is no longer the whole story, report on these five things each month:

Instead of only... Also track... Where to find it
Organic sessions Visibility: impressions for your key topics Search Console Performance report (AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted under "Web")
Rankings Mentions: is your business named in AI answers? A monthly check of 10 to 20 buyer questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google
Total clicks Branded search: are more people searching for you by name? Search Console branded queries filter
Bounce rate Enquiries and qualified leads from search GA4 key events and your CRM
Keyword positions Share of voice against competitors Competitor benchmarking

Rising impressions with falling clicks is normal now. Rising impressions, rising branded search and steady enquiries means search is working, even if traffic is flat. Our guide to the five numbers every owner should check monthly covers the enquiry side in detail.

How to win the mention when you can't win the click

1. Answer the question first

AI Overviews and featured snippets lift clear answers. Put a direct, one or two sentence answer at the top of the page, then the detail. This is the answer engine optimisation layer of the full search stack.

2. Be specific enough to cite

Research on generative engine optimisation, presented at KDD 2024, found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources made content up to 40% more visible in AI answers. Vague claims give AI nothing to quote.

3. Put your name inside the answer

Original data, named experts and named frameworks travel with your brand. If an AI quotes "the five numbers every owner should check" or a statistic from your own research, your business comes with it.

4. Be present where AI looks

AI tools don't only read your website. They draw on reviews, directories, industry sites and video. In G2's 2026 buyer research, 45% of software buyers said citations from review sites were the most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI-generated answer. Keep those profiles current and consistent.

5. Give people a reason to click

Some content can't be summarised in a sentence: pricing explained properly, case studies, calculators, a real comparison. Build pages that are worth the visit, and make the next step obvious when people arrive.

Words, pictures and video

Search results and AI answers increasingly pull in images and video. A case study video with a proper transcript, or a diagram with a clear caption, gives search engines and AI something to show and cite. That's why Storyhouse, our creative team, works alongside our search team rather than separately.

Where this fits

Zero-click search is the clearest sign that SEO, AI search and agentic search have become one job. In a Growth System, DigitalArchitect® comes first, benchmarking how visible a business is in traditional search, answer engines and AI search against its competitors. That shows where you're being mentioned, where a competitor is named instead, and what to fix first.

A zero-click search is one where the searcher gets what they need on the results page, from an AI Overview, featured snippet or knowledge panel, and doesn't click through to any website.

Yes. Pew Research Center found users clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% without one.

Yes. AI answers draw on pages search engines have indexed and trust, and buyers still visit to verify before they enquire. What changes is how you measure success.

There's no separate AI Overviews report. Search Console includes that traffic in the Performance report under the Web search type. For mentions, check your key buyer questions in Google and the main AI tools each month.
