Every business investing in SEO wants the same thing: to rank higher than the businesses next to them in search results. But here's the uncomfortable truth, SEO is a zero-sum game. There's only one first position. When your competitor wins it, you lose it. So the real question isn't "how do I do SEO?" It's "how do I win it?"
Most businesses answer that question by spending more, more content, more links, more budget. That's rarely the winning move. Beating your competitors in search comes down to strategy, not spend.
Outranking rivals isn't about outspending them, it's about being smarter with where you put your effort. Three things separate the businesses that win from the ones that don't.
Most businesses target the keywords they think their customers use, not the ones customers actually use. Real search behaviour is often messier, more specific and less "on-brand" than businesses expect. Finding the genuinely valuable keywords, including the ones your competitors have overlooked, reduces the competition you are fighting for top rankings and opens up demand nobody else is chasing.
Targeting only transaction-phase keywords, the "buy now" searches, means ignoring most of the customer's journey. Customers research, compare and build preference long before they're ready to purchase. Ranking for the awareness and consideration phases as well means you are building trust and brand preference before a competitor even gets a look-in at the transaction stage.
Rankings on their own don't pay the bills. Strategic SEO is built to deliver a specific business outcome, more traffic, more leads, more sales, and success is measured against that outcome, not just position on the page. If your SEO strategy can't tell you what it's actually trying to achieve commercially, it isn't a strategy.
"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.", Sun Tzu
Sun Tzu wasn't writing about SEO, but the principle holds. You can't out-position competitors you don't understand. Yet surprisingly few businesses ever conduct a proper competitor analysis, which means the ones that do have a real advantage. Here's the five-step framework we use:
Do this properly and consistently, and you are already ahead of most of the field, because most businesses skip it entirely.
